Sinking vs Floating Fishing Nets: How Buyers Should Choose
Sinking and floating nets are used for different water layers, fish behavior and local fishing methods.

When to use sinking nets
Sinking nets are designed to fish near the bottom where demersal species feed. They work best for catching bottom-dwelling fish like grouper, snapper, sole and catfish. The net sinks naturally due to the weight of the material and attached lead sinkers. Sinking nets are standard for most commercial bottom fisheries worldwide.
When to use floating nets
Floating nets stay near the water surface using additional floats. They target pelagic species that feed in the upper water column, such as mackerel, sardine and tuna. Floating nets are also used in shallow waters where bottom nets might get caught on rocks or debris.
Hybrid setups for multi-species fishing
Some fisheries combine sinking and floating elements in the same net configuration. This allows catching both bottom and mid-water species in a single set. The choice ultimately depends on your target species, local fishing grounds, and the vessel equipment available.
