How to Choose Floats and Lead Sinkers for Fishing Nets

Floats and lead sinkers should be matched to net length, fishing area, target water layer and net type.

How to Choose Floats and Lead Sinkers for Fishing Nets

Float types and their applications

EVA floats are the most common choice for trammel and gill nets due to their affordability and reliable buoyancy. PVC floats offer higher durability for deep-water and rough-weather fishing. Foam-filled floats provide additional buoyancy for heavy nets. Float size should be matched to net weight—larger nets need larger or more floats.

Lead sinker selection guide

Standard cast lead sinkers work for most net types. The total weight should balance the float buoyancy for proper net tension. A typical trammel net requires approximately 1kg of lead per 10m of net height. For strong current areas, additional weighting may be needed along the foot rope.

Spacing and attachment methods

Floats should be spaced evenly along the head rope. Standard spacing is 1–2 meters between floats depending on net weight. Lead sinkers are attached to the foot rope at similar intervals. Both floats and sinkers should be securely tied to prevent shifting during hauling operations.
