Fishing Net Accessories Guide: Floats, Sinkers, Twine and Rope

Float selection guide

Floats keep your net upright in the water. EVA floats are lightweight and affordable for most inshore applications. PVC floats offer better durability for deeper water and rougher conditions. Choose float size based on your net weight—heavier nets need larger or more floats spaced closer together.

Lead sinkers and net weighting

Bottom weights keep the net stretched and on the seabed. Standard lead sinkers work for most trammel and gill nets. The total weight should match the float buoyancy to achieve the correct net tension. A rule of thumb is 1kg of lead per 10m of net height for typical coastal fishing.

Twine and rope requirements

Head rope (float line) and foot rope (lead line) must be strong enough to handle the net weight and catch load. PE twine is common for most applications. Nylon twine offers higher strength for heavy-duty operations. Edge ropes and connecting lines should match your existing rigging system.
