Difference Between Trammel Net and Gill Net
A trammel net is normally a three-layer net, while a gill net is a single-layer net. The best choice depends on fish species and fishing method.

Construction differences
A trammel net has three layers—two outer layers of large mesh and an inner layer of smaller mesh. Fish swimming into the net push through the large outer mesh and become trapped in the loose inner mesh pocket. A gill net has a single layer where fish are caught by their gills when they try to swim through.
Which net suits your fishery
Trammel nets are more effective for catching a wider range of species but are heavier and more expensive. They work well in areas with mixed fish populations. Gill nets are lighter, cheaper and preferred for targeting specific species with known size ranges. Many commercial fisheries use both types depending on the season and target catch.
Cost and maintenance comparison
Gill nets cost approximately 30–40% less than equivalent trammel nets. Trammel nets require more careful handling during hauling due to the loose inner panel. However, trammel nets generally have a longer working life when properly maintained because the three-layer construction distributes stress more evenly.
